The pebble, the pond and you

The pebble in you

Picture yourself as a pebble. A little child standing next to a pond picks you up. You are flying through the air. A breeze is flowing over you. You are full of potential energy. Now is the time of transformation. You connect with the water. Your potential energy is now real energy. This energy ripples out and touches, changes and transforms the pond. The impact of some of the ripples are known but many are unknown. One thing is certain, you unleashed the potential energy and caused real change to occur.

The known

There are things you will do today where you see the change. For example, I know I will sit down have breakfast with my children. I know I will have a weekly meeting with my staff at work. In both cases we will talk about things that have happened and things that need to happen. This is equivalent to the first few rings after the splash. They are apparent and obvious.

The unknown

The activities in my inner ring were shaped an fueled by the outer rings of others. They made a splash at some point in their lives and the rings went out. They could see the immediate impact. For example: they finished a book, they gave a presentation, they ran a meeting, they did a kind act. I bet they had no idea that someone in my part of the world would read their thought as the "quote of the day" to a ten and six year old. I bet a colleague that ran really effective meetings did not realize that that energy inspired me to do the same years later.

There are loved ones and mentors in my life that spoke to me in my formative years* that still speak to me today.

The faith

My reflection on this helps me understand one aspect of faith. The dedication to giving your best will produce outcomes that are known and unknown.

The conclusion

So as you choose your projects and next "physical visible" actions today. Think of them as pebbles. Imagine the ripples. Have faith that they are making a difference.

* - My formative years have not ended! ;)

This is the first time I have ever thought of the impact of my actions as known and unknown. Thanks Mike. This will give me a lot to reflect on.

Brian,

You're welcome. It is an interesting experiment to go to a pond to actually toss a pebble or two. I have a pond near my house. I sometimes go there with the kids or by myself to get into a different mental zone.
